tale
In a continuous process the portrait of a man is transferred
through various masks into the portrait of another man
and back again. The masks are from Java, Indonesia, and
were used originally in ceremonial plays within the kraton.
The kraton is the palace district of a sultanate. Some
of the masks represent characteres of the Ramayana epic,
others represent characters from stories abount the sultan.
Like all epic stories in the different cultures, these
old legends deal with love, power and death. The soundcollage
of Brian Eno brings together elements of western ambient
music and sounds related to the indonesian gamelan music.
