orfeo
(prinzenchant)
2002, on the occasion of the Feldkirch Festivals 2002, where
Monteverdi's opera "Orfeo" was performed. 29. Mai
– 23. Juni, Palais Liechtenstein, Feldkirch, Austria,
Videoinstallation as part of the group show "Orpheus
– Singen in der Unterwelt".
It is about an "underworld"-condition, a level of
sensitivity at the edge of rational perception and the unconscious,
the libido and the instincts. There are images of the belly
of a pregnant woman as well as of a traditional pregnancy
ceremony on Java, Indonesia. The pregnant woman is american,
white and christian, her husband indonesian, dark skinned
and moslem. Both of them live a contemporary oriented life
style and we see them surrender half serious and half amused
to this old javanese ritual. In between we see the prince
reciting excerpts out of the libretto of Monteverdi's "Orfeo".
We also see scenes of turning persons wearing javanese masks.
Eventually the video leads into supersonic images of a baby
in the belly of its mother.
